Egypt

Every travel brochure also needs information about the food the people in that area like to eat.  Here is some information about the food in Egypt.  Remember you want to make people come to Egypt so you have to make trying the new food sound fun and exciting!
 

Food:

Rice and bread are important parts of many Egyptian’s diets and is served with most meals. It is used to scoop up the many different dips, foods and sauces there are. Egyptians also love their vegetables and beans. 

Here are some special Egyptian foods (the names are very hard to read and say):

    Ful Medames: it is made with lava beans s and served with oil, garlic and lemon juice.

    Gibna Domiati: A white soft cheese made from buffalo milk.

    Kushari: A popular dish for lunch. It is made with pasta, tomato sauce, rice, onions garlic, and chickpeas.

    Fatta: Layers of rice and fried bread, covered in garlic and meat soup.

Egypt

Every travel brochure needs information about the weather! Remember, you want to make whoever reads your brochure REALLY want to come all the way to Egypt. 

Weather:

In Egypt, days are usually warm or hot, and the nights are cool. Egypt only has two seasons.  A mild winter lasts from November to April and a hot summer that lasts from May to October.  

The average rainfall per year in Egypt is only about 20 centimeters.  Cairo, Egypt’s capitol, only gets about 2.5 centimeters of rain every year.  Did you know that Egypt is more than 90% desert areas?  In the desert areas it might only rain once every few years! 

When you write this information think: No one wants it to be raining when they are on vacation.  If they go to Egypt it probably won't rain! It was also probably nice and warm!

Tornado Alley

Did you know that there is a part of the United States that is called Tornado Alley?  Tornado Alley has some of the most dangerous tornadoes in all of the United States.  On Monday, we are going to read an article from Wonderopolis.org about Tornado Alley. 

Before we read, I have a video for you to watch.  In the video, people who call themselves storm chasers, are chasing storms in Tornado Alley.  They are trying to get as close as they can to the tornadoes to take pictures and videos.  They sound a little crazy to me.  Check out the video below.

Tornado Story!

Tomorrow we are going to read a story about a tornado that came down on a soccer field!  A boy named Nick was playing soccer when a tornado started to form.  He and his family had to run for cover to escape the strong winds.  Do you think him and his family will make it through safe?


Check out these video clips of tornados from around the United States.  This will give you an idea of what it might have looked like on the soccer field that day.

 

What do you think will happen to Nick and his family in our story tomorrow.  Will they make it out safe?

 

Jet Streams

Have you ever heard of the term jet stream?  The next time I see you, we will be reading an article about a jet stream.  If you want to learn a little bit about jet streams before we read the article, I have posted a video below.  On the video, meteorologists explain what a jet stream is and how it works.  I hope you enjoy the video!

Water Polo

Tomorrow, we are going to read an article about the history of water polo.  I thought you might be interested in some cool facts I found about water polo.

  

• Did you know that water polo players swim up to 1.5 miles during one game?

• Did you know that during a water polo game the ball can be thrown up to 60 miles per hour?

• Did you know that men's water polo was the FIRST team sport added to the Olympic games in 1900?

• Did you know that women's water polo was not in the olympics until 2000?

Baseball Bats

Tomorrow we are going to read an article about baseball bats.  In the major leagues, baseball players can only use wooden bats.  The article we are reading tomorrow will explain why major league baseball players use wooden bats instead of metal bats. 

When you play baseball do you use a wooden bat or a metal bat? 

                    

What is a Tornado?

A tornado is a tube of air that touches both the ground and a cloud.
 
Tornadoes are sometimes called twisters.

Most tornadoes have wind speeds less than 100 miles per hour.

Really big tornadoes can hit wind speeds of over 300 miles per hour. 

The States hit by tornadoes the most are Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Florida.

The USA has about  1,200 tornadoes every year. 

Basements and other places under the ground are the safest places to be during a tornado. It is also a good idea to stay away from windows.

Roller Coaster

Have you heard of a roller coaster that opened last year in Japan?  The roller coaster is called the Takabisha and it was named the steepest roller coaster in the world!  It takes its passengers  up 141 feet and then takes them all the way back down going 62 miles per hour.  The roller coaster also has many twists.  The whole ride is only 112 seconds.  That is almost two minutes long.

It cost 37 million dollars to make the roller coaster.  To go for a ride on the roller coaster you have to pay 13 dollars every time! Many people that have taken a ride on the roller coaster say that it is worth the money.
